A white elephant gift has to land with a mixed group before anyone knows who will take it home. Favor a joke people can understand in a few seconds, at ordinary speaking volume, without a long backstory about one specific recipient.

Broad room fit does not mean bland. A visibly strange useful object, an overcommitted version of an everyday tool, or a harmless gag with a second life usually travels better than clothing sizes, personal insults, dietary assumptions, or a joke that depends on embarrassing someone.

Check four things: quick reaction, some usefulness after the laugh, enough visual or practical appeal to invite a steal, and a broad fit for the people in the room. A gift does not need to win every category, but it should have more going for it than shock value alone.
