Choose useful weird, not decorative weird
Start with a kitchen job the recipient already does: cutting pizza, grating cheese, serving snacks, protecting a hand from a hot pan, or making coffee. A funny shape can make that familiar task more memorable. An object with no clear job has to compete for counter or cabinet space after the first laugh.
A novelty mug or serving piece still counts as useful when it fits an existing routine. For a small kitchen, favor one compact tool with an obvious purpose over a large single-use machine. For an experienced cook, avoid novelty versions of specialized gear unless you know the tool will suit the way they cook.
